The Department of Women and Child Development at the Secretariat level was created in 1994, before which it was a part of the Social Welfare Department. The Department is headed by a Minister supported by a Secretariat with a staff strength of 45. The field departments attached to the Women and Child Development Department are :

* The Department is responsible for the welfare and development of women, children, the elderly, and the differently-abled in the State. Besides implementing developmental programs, it formulates necessary policies, programs, and schemes. Also, it coordinates the efforts of both governmental and non-governmental organizations working in the field of women, children, senior citizens, and those who are differently abled.
The Secretariat is the administrative office of the Department of Women and Child Development. It is responsible for planning, policy-making, budgeting and other welfare services for women and children. This board coordinates with the Planning, Finance, and other related Government Departments and provides guidelines and norms for the overall development of women and children. It assists in decision-making during Cabinet meetings, legislative functions, and liaison with the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment Government of India. Overall, the Department aims to improve the socio-economic status of the disadvantaged groups among women, Children, Senior Citizens, and the Differently abled.
